This kitchen tool is used to pound, crush, and grind spices and other aromatics.

The mortar is a heavy bowl typically made of ceramic or stone. The pestle is a heavy bat-shaped tool which is used to crush and grind substances in the mortar.

Using your Mortar & Pestle

Place your food to be crushed in the mortar and pound or grind with the pestle, certain foods will require gentle crushing while others a very firm pounding.  This method slowly releases oils and elements in the food which will generate much more flavor than other methods of combining.

Grind whole spices to a coarse or fine powder using pestle.

Crush nuts by gently pounding with the pestle.

For dressings and sauces, mash your aromatics with a bit of salt to form a paste.  Add your acid and work into the paste with the pestle.  Slowly drizzle in olive oil, incorporating with your pestle until you have reached desired flavor and consistency.

Caring for your Mortar and Pestle

Do not put in the dishwasher.  After use, gently wash in warm, soapy water using a brush if needed.  Rinse and air dry.
